rmlint is a command-line tool that scans directories for duplicate files and other filesystem files.
It compares file contents to identify duplicates, with filters for size and modification time. It can find files that are empty, have broken symbolic links or files that have invalid ownership permissions.
By default, a scan leaves the scanned files untouched and writes a shell script for review. You can choose which copies to keep and configure the script to delete duplicates or replace them with hard links or symbolic links. It can deal with caching so that it saves time in searching again until there is a difference in the file.
rmlint is for users such as system administrators, developers and archivists who need a tool to reclaiming space and find duplicate files in large file collections or checking an old backup drive for files already stored elsewhere.
